Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disease that can cause pain in multiple parts of the body and is identified by the presence of tender points. It can be present in the presence of other autoimmune diseases. Oftentimes, another diagnosis such as persistent insomnia, depression, anxiety, overactive bladder, and irritable bowel symptoms can accompany the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and may be contributing to the presenting symptoms.

The diagnosis of Fibromyalgia brings good news and bad news. The good news is that in the absence of connective tissue diseases, it does not affect longevity and doesn't damage any vital organs of the body by itself. The bad news is that it can significantly affect the quality of life and the treatment options are limited.
Medicines such as duloxetine, gabapentin, pregabalin, SSRI, SNRI, Amitriptyline are some of the options that may help. However, behavioral therapy including mild aerobic exercises, aquatic exercises, and meditation, play an important role in the outcomes. With the advances in the research,  hopefully, we will have more information on the disease in the future. If you have any of the above symptoms, please schedule an appointment with a doctor for the work-up. If you choose us, we will be happy to take care of you.
