Gout

Gout can present as sudden onset of severe pain in one or more joints. It most commonly affects the first toe and can also affect other joints such as ankles, knees, hands, etc.

Gout can be prevented to a certain extent by avoiding seafood, red meat, alcohol, soda, and high fructose corn syrup.

Tea, coffee, orange juice, and water are considered safe drinks in Gout.

Gout can be treated with medicines like Allopurinol, Febuxostat, Pegloticase, and others and usually needs monitoring of Uric acid along with routine labs.

Compliance with medicine is very important. We advise not to make any changes to your Gout medications without a discussion with your doctor because any change in the dose without appropriate treatment may precipitate Gout.
