Lupus is a systemic disease that can affect many parts of your body. It commonly affects, skin, kidneys, joints and can give rise to symptoms such as butterfly rash on the cheeks, oral ulcer, hair loss in patches, fatigue, fever, pleuritis, pericarditis, seizure, clot, multiple miscarriages, and many more. It is diagnosed by blood tests and may need a biopsy of the involved organs.
There are good treatments available nowadays including hydroxychloroquine, Azathioprine, Methotrexate+Folic acid, Belimumab, Mycophenolate, Voclosporin, and for severe cases, Rituximab and Cyclophosphamide. These medications are high-risk medications and have side effects that your doctor will discuss with you before starting you on any of these.
For severe cases, the disease may need more than one specialty such as Nephrology if kidneys are involved, Neurology if the brain is involved,
If you have any of the above symptoms, please schedule an appointment with a doctor for the work-up. If you choose us, we will be happy to take care of you.
